WORCESTER City suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against League Two side Newport County in their second pre-season outing.

The game’s only goal came on 34 minutes courtesy of Newport forward Oliver Greaves at Sixways Stadium.

City went into the fixture off the back of an impressive 2-0 victory against Newport’s League Two rivals Cheltenham Town.

And Chris Cornes named two trialists in Worcester’s starting line-up which also featured summer signings Paul Downing, Spencer Hamilton and Dan Sweeney.

Newport almost broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes as Greaves saw his header come back off the crossbar.

And Greaves eventually put Newport ahead just past the half-hour mark as the Newport forward created space for a shot in the box before coolly finding the corner of the net from eight-yards out.

The visitors almost doubled their lead on the stroke of half time only for City goalkeeper Haydn Whitcombe to make a crucial save.

Worcester went close to an equaliser on the hour mark as Kyle Belmonte lashed a shot inches over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.

Chances were at a premium thereafter with neither side able to trouble the scoreline further as City suffered a narrow home defeat at Sixways.

Worcester are next in action against Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday, July 22 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Sixways.
