WORCESTER City marked their first home game at Sixways Stadium with a 2-0 pre-season victory against League Two side Cheltenham Town.

A brace from Zac Guinan ensured City made a winning start in their first game at their new home ground.

Worcester named one trialist in their starting line-up while striker Dan Sweeney was handed a debut up front.

City went close early on as Liam Lockett saw his header comfortably saved by Cheltenham’s trialist goalkeeper.

Cheltenham’s first chance came past the 20-minute mark as George Miller fired over the crossbar on the turn.

Worcester went close soon after as Felix Miles saw his curling effort on the half-volley find the top of the net.

Cheltenham then made eight changes on the half-hour mark.

However, the hosts broke the deadlock four minutes later when Guinan outmuscled a Town defender and latched onto a ball in-behind before coolly finding the bottom left corner.

And City almost doubled their lead shortly before half time with Sweeney unable to keep his lobbed effort down when one-on-one with the Cheltenham goalkeeper.

The Town stopper then plucked Jordan Lymn’s effort out of the air.

Cheltenham almost drew level on the stroke of half time as Haydn Whitcombe superbly tipped Tom King’s effort onto the crossbar.

The visitors made further changes at the interval, fielding a young side for much of the second period.

Cheltenham’s Liam Dulson twice went close early in the second half.

However, Guinan doubled City’s lead on on 71 minutes when he raced in behind for a second time and made no mistake.

Guinan almost completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes left to play only to hit the outside of the post.

Worcester are next in action against Newport County on Saturday, July 12 with kick-off at 3pm at Sixways.
