ACADEMY youngster Tom Fawcett helped England to a silver medal finish at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The 17-year-old back row was part of the Team England Sevens squad which lost to Samoa 10-5 in the gold medal match at the Queen Elizabeth Sporting Complex in the Bahamas on Friday.

Having lost to the same opposition 19-7 in their opening match at the Games, England went on to record victories over Canada, Sri Lanka and Fiji, as well as an emphatic 72-0 win over the host nation, to reach the final.

An early try from Kelvin Masoe in the corner put Samoa in the ascendancy, before Frank Tato doubled the Pacific Islanders’ lead moments into the second half.

Oliver Sleightholme, son of former England international Jon, galvanised the England fightback when he dotted down in the corner after receiving a quick ball, following a penalty against Samoa for offside.

The ensuing missed conversion made it a five-point game, but Samoa held on for the win.

Warriors’ academy forwards transition coach, Mike Hill, said: “As a club we’re extremely proud of Tom and what he’s achieved with England. He’s a talented young player and we’re looking forward to seeing more of him in the new season.”
