Worcester's game with Gloucester postponed

Worcester Editorial 7th Feb, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

WORCESTER City’s derby day tie with Gloucester City today (Saturday) had to be postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Despite a local referee deeming the surface suitable for the tie to go ahead at 11am this morning, a decision was made by the match official about 1.30pm to call the game off.

Manager Carl Heeley said the frozen pitch had thawed out from between 11am and midday but the referee thought conditions would deteriorate as the game went on.

“We could be critical of a late postponement but there are patchy bits still frozen and that was the concern of the referee,” he said.

“Some would have played it some would not have but he was concerned the improvement shown since 11am would go the other way from 3pm and affect players safety.

“We are disappointed but we understand the decision.”

The Severn derby game was set to attract a bumper crowd to Aggborough and the inevitable switch to a midweek fixture will now be likely to see the attendance drop below the season’s average.

“The disappointing thing is it is a local derby,” Heeley added. “There would have been a decent crowd today and it just takes a hit when it is a midweek game because we probably won’t get the same support as a Saturday so that is frustrating.

“We all love being involved in football on a Saturday afternoon whether your 20 as a player or a manager in your 40s you still miss it.”

A new date for the encounter has not been set.
