Worcester looking to 'inflict pain' and relegate Colwyn Bay

MANAGER Carl Heeley has said he wants his Worcester City side to ‘inflict some pain’ by relegating Colwyn Bay when the two sides meet in the season finale tomorrow (Saturday).

A memorable campaign for Worcester is set to end with a gripping climax as the The North Wales outfit head to Aggborough knowing only a win can keep alive their hopes of retaining their status in the Conference North.

But even a maximum return may not be enough for Bay, who occupy the final relegation spot, as they sit two points behind both Brackley Town and Stalybridge Celtic so will need a slip up from either side.

Worcester will be hoping Brackley can do them a favour in the Blue and Whites quest for eighth place as Town face a Hednesford side just a place and a point above Heeley’s men. Anything less than three points for Hednesford will leave the door open for Worcester to secure eighth spot in the sixth tier of English football.

And despite narrowly missing out on the Worcestershire Senior Cup in midweek, going down 2-1 to Kidderminster Harriers, City have won two of their last three league games and have only lost one of the last five.

Kyle Haynes, who was cup-tied for the Harriers game, is set to be recalled to the squad but there will be no return for Danny Jackman, Connor Gater and Michael Taylor, who will all be looking to come back strongly in pre-season following lengthy spells on the side.

Nathan Vaughan also serves the final of his three-game ban so Jose Veiga will see out the campaign in between the sticks.

Colwyn Bay looked doomed for the drop in March, but a run of four wins in six gave The Seagulls a renewed sense of optimism in their bid to avoid the drop.

However, a disappointing home defeat to Lowestoft Town – coupled with wins for Brackley and Stalybridge – pulled Gus Williams’ men back into the bottom three and means they have now lost three of their last four games at just the wrong time.

Manager Heeley said: “There is never a shortage of people in football waiting to kick you when you are down and we have had a good season and want to finish in eighth position if we can.

“It is going to be tough for Colwyn Bay but we have to be brutal and go out and inflict some pain and relegate them.

“That is football, we have got to be professional about it and that is what we all aim to do. It is not Worcester City’s fault if we relegate them it is the 42 games.

“We want to finish our season off on a high to round off what has been a memorable season and for the supporters who have been fabulous to us and come out in great numbers all season, so it would be nice to finish off the campaign with three points.”
