UNIVERSITY of Worcester graduate Matthew Hudson-Smith was part of the winning Great British quartet which won bronze in the sprint relay at the World Athletics Championships in London on Sunday night.

The 22-year-old Wolverhampton-born sprinter ran an impressive first leg in the 4×400 metres relay in front of a roaring home crowd in the London Stadium.

Hudson-Smith cleanly handed over the baton to his GB teammate Dwayne Cowan to put the quartet in a dominant position.

After a brilliant second leg from Cowan, Rabah Yousif took over for the penultimate lap.

Racing in third place, Yousif chased the USA and Trinidad & Tobago hard, setting up Martyn Rooney on the final leg of the race.

Rooney did manage to extend the gap behind him to the fourth place runner to make sure he claimed a bronze medal for Great Britain on the finish line.

Trinidad & Tobago won the gold medal in a surprising victory after ending the USA’s dominance in the event.

The United States had won gold in the 4×400 metre relay at the last six World Championships, but this time they had to settle for silver.
