Wolves recruit power forward Navajas

WORCESTER Wolves have recruited talented power forward Alejandro Navajas to strengthen their team ahead of the 2016/17 British Basketball League (BBL) campaign.

The 6ft 7in Spaniard, who is the club’s sixth summer signing, joins the University of Worcester Arena outfit from Spain’s 2015/16 LEB Silver Division champions Marin Peixegalego.

Having won the league’s cup and promotion to the prestigious LEB Gold Division with his former club last season, while averaging ten points and five rebounds per game, Navajas will bring a wealth of European experience to the new-look wolfpack.

Wolves’ former power forward Javi Múgica has switched to Marin Peixegalego.

Head coach Paul James will be hoping Navajas will form a powerful partnership with new recruit Deondre McWhorter.

“I’m extremely happy to be here. I feel very motivated and eager to start working,” said Navajas.

“It’ll be my first opportunity to play abroad and I’m very excited to be helping Wolves and using my experience.

“Last season I won the league and the cup with Marin, but I’m still hungry for trophies and I’ve come to the UK to fight for championships,” he added.

James said: “Alejandro has a great deal of experience of playing in Spain in the highly competitive LEB Gold and Silver leagues, where he has had much success, so we’re really looking forward to Alejandro joining up with the team.”

Mick Donovan, Wolves managing director, said: “Once again, we’ve used our contacts in Spain to secure the potential players who can help the team.

“The type of game and style Alejandro brings will clearly support the progress of other players throughout the team, whilst also making a huge impact within the front court unit.”
