Wolves looking to end year with derby day win

WORCESTER Wolves director of basketball Paul James believes the strength in depth and variety in his squad will help the club stay in the BBL Championship title race in the crucial months ahead.

Top of the table Worcester face Midlands rivals Birmingham Knights at home on Saturday evening (December 28, 7.30pm) knowing victory will ensure them top spot going into what could be an exciting 2014.

This month saw Wolves strengthen further with the re-signing of Kai Williams and James believes he has the squad to seriously compete for British Basketball’s biggest prize and land the club BBL silverware for the first time.

And Wolves have already shown this season they can win matches in different ways after coming through close encounters (some going into overtime) and outclassing teams with ruthless scoring – having hit the 100 point mark several times already this season.

“I like the depth we have on the team and especially now that Kia Williams has joined us,” James said. “We have many options that we can go to now which should keep us in the championship race.”

Saturday’s game will be the first at the University of Worcester Arena between Worcester and Birmingham who in stark contrast to the home side are struggling and still looking for their first league win of the season after enduring a difficult first season back in the BBL.

But James has warned his sign to avoid complacency and is determined to end a successful 2013 in winning style.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he added. “It’s nice to have a game at Christmas. We’ve done it the last couple of years and it has always drawn one of our biggest crowds of the season.

“Hopefully Birmingham will be bringing along a few fans as well, which should make for a fabulous atmosphere.

“Their form has improved of late. We will need to make sure that we finish the year off playing the way we have done all season up to now.”
