Wolves aiming for historic triumph

Worcester Editorial 26th Mar, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

WORCESTER Wolves will be bidding to win their first ever piece of silverware this weekend when they play in the BBL Trophy final.

The club will look to make it a day to remember on Sunday when they take to the court at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow in front of thousands of spectators in what will be the biggest match in their history.

They will be up against Glasgow Rocks who have the advantage of playing in their own city with a huge crowd to cheer them on.

The final is the second part of a huge weekend for Wolves who first meet Sheffield Sharks at home on Friday in the BBL Championship.

But Wolves go into their first ever showpiece final with winning momentum on their side having beaten Glasgow in their two previous league meetings this season.

Wolves recorded a 92-77 win in the city in November and came out on top winning 89-82 last month at the University of Worcester Arena.

Speaking to the Observer, Wolves’ head coach Paul James said it will be important for his team to not let the occasion get the better of them on the big day.

“It’s going to be an historic occasion, the atmosphere will be electric.” he said.

“There will be a lot of people going on Sunday who have been following the club from day one and I hope the day proves a special one for them.

“We’ve had a great season and I am delighted we have been able to reach our first major final – especially considering we’ve had a tough draw having to beat London Lions, Newcastle Eagles and Sheffield Sharks to get to the final.

“We’ll be playing to more than 6,000 fans with probably 5,000 of them rooting for Glasgow so it’s going to be tough. We’ve worked towards this for so many years.

“It’s important our players don’t let the occasion get to them – if we play like we have done over the season then I’m sure we’ll be fine.

“We are going to treat it like any other game we play, I think it’s important we do that and I’m trying to do things as normal as possible this week.”
