Wanderers suffer relegation on the final day

WORCESTER Wanderers were relegated from National Three South West after a 25-22 defeat to Old Redcliffians on the final day of the season.

Wanderers, who were promoted from Midlands One West last season, needed to equal or better relegation rivals Old Patesians’ result to continue their stay in the fifth tier of English rugby.

Kieran Morris struck twice before Sam Carter went over to get within four points of Old Reds, but they were unable to find the match-winning score, while Old Pats clinched a 29-15 win over Amersham and Chiltern to seal their fate.

With so much riding on the encounter at Scotland Lane, Wanderers’ nerves were evident in the early stages as they let Olds Reds take control. Jack Steer slotted home two penalties before Henry Bird touched down to leave Worcester trailing 13-0.

But Wanderers responded as they closed the gap to 13-10 at half time thanks to a Tom Biggs penalty and a try from Morris.

Once again, though, it was the hosts who got off to the better start as they quickly opened up a 15 point cushion. A superb ten minute spell at the start of the second period saw Henry Goldson and Dan Fry go over for Old Reds.

With news filtering through that Olds Pats were winning at Amersham, Worcester knew they needed to up their game and they showed real grit and determination to get back into the contest.

After a period of pressure, Morris chalked up his second try before Carter latched on to Biggs’ diagonal kick to score in the corner. It left Worcester needing another try to secure victory. Despite numerous penalties conceded by Old Reds’ scrambling defence, though, they failed to score that elusive try, which would have retained their status in National Three.
