Vesty excited by chance to work with McKay

NEWLY-APPOINTED backs coach Sam Vesty said he was relishing the prospect of ‘picking the brains’ of former Australia attack coach Jim McKay.

McKay, who was part of the Wallabies’ backroom set-up last year, will join Greene King IPA Championship leaders Warriors as a coaching consultant later this month.

Director of rugby Dean Ryan’s decision to bring in McKay for a four week period comes after Vesty replaced the recently departed Shane Howarth as back coach.

The 33-year-old said he got to know McKay when they were both at Leicester Tigers and he admitted he was looking forward to teaming up with him at Sixways.

“He is a top bloke who has got a great brain when it comes to think about attacking rugby, so I can’t wait to sit down with him and learn a lot from him,” he said.

“He has got a huge knowledge of what it takes to be at the top and winning and playing some really good rugby. He has got all the reasoning behind that to back it up which is the important part.”

Vesty said he was grateful of the trust Ryan had showed in him since arriving at Worcester to help nurture the club’s talented youngsters.

“Dean gave me a shot out of nowhere really,” Vesty said. ” I knew him to speak to, but he gave me the chance to come here and grow.

“I was opinionated enough when I first got here to think I knew everything. But it was quickly pointed out to me that I didn’t.

“I feel I have got some knowledge, but the hardest thing for me was learning how to put that across to the players and I think I have come on leaps and bounds with that.”
