Valkyries suffer ten-try thumping at the hands of Bristol

VALKYRIES shipped ten tries in a resounding 62-10 defeat to Bristol Ladies in the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s at Sixways on Saturday.

Bristol winger Lillian Stoeger bagged five tires and Lucy Attwood scooped a hat-trick, whilst Cat McNaney and Caity Mattinson also crossed the whitewash.

Valkyries’ Zoe Bennion crossed twice in the first-half, but they only proved to be consolation scores as the heavy defeat leaves Worcester rooted to the foot of the table after two games.

It was the hosts who took the lead when, after enjoying plenty of possession and territory, Bennion crashed over from close-range.

But Bristol hit back instantly when Attwood put in a superb 35-metre run off the back of a lineout to score, before Stoeger added a second two minutes later when she stormed under the posts.

McNaney then sliced through the home defence in midfield to score, before Stoeger grounded after a neat Bristol move from deep within their own 22.

Bennion then showed great strength to crash over from five metres as Valkyries entered the break 33-10 down.

But the 23-point advantage was stretched further in the second half as Stoeger secured her hat-trick following a poor 22-metre drop-out, which allowed the winger to race under the posts with ease.

Fly-half Attwood then claimed her hat-trick after touching down from close-range as the rout continued.

Bristol’s powerful forwards crashed over a Valkyries ruck, turning over possession and shipping the ball out wide for Stoeger to ground in the corner, before the winger scored her fifth try courtesy of a quick penalty offload from Mattinson.

The latter then dived over a ruck at the death to wrap up the ten-try demolition.

*CAVALIERS suffered an emphatic 41-19 defeat to Northampton Wanderers in the Premiership Rugby A League at Sixways on Monday night.

Tries for Wanderers’ Api Ratuniyarawa and Charlie Clare, alongside a penalty try on the stroke of half-time, opened up a healthy 20-point advantage at the break.

Scrum-half Tom Kessell then added a bonus-point fourth try minutes after the interval to effectively kill the game off, before Cavaliers’ Kai Owen and Ted Hill both touched down following good work from the forward pack.

But late tries from Matt Beesley and Alex Mitchell put the game out of sight, before Tom Dodd added a late consolation score.

Cavaliers travel to Lancashire to take on Sale Jets at Heywood Road on Monday night (kick-off 7.30pm).
