A TRIO of University of Worcester graduates have been selected to play for Wales in a prestigious international tournament.

Sam Roberts, Ben Potts and Damian Edwards will join the Welsh squad for the 2016 European Championship of Small Countries in Moldova which bean yesterday (Tuesday) and runs until Sunday (July 3).

The 20-year-old Roberts, who has just finished a three-year course in sports studies at the university, will play guard, 31-year-old Potts, who played for Worcester Wolves’ professional side for seven years, will also line up as guard and 26-year-old Edwards, who has represented Wales for the last four years, will play power forward.

The news comes after Alex Radu, current assistant coach of Worcester Wolves and senior lecturer in sports coaching basketball at the university, was appointed the assistant coach of Wales for the competition.

Radu said: “We have some pretty tough opponents in our group, considering Andorra are current champions and Moldova has a Russian influence in their style and approach to games.

“Our attention as coaching staff is to create a competitive team that has a European and modern style of play, which will create problems to whoever we will come up against.”

Wales, led by Latvian head coach Kristaps Petrovs, played Andorra in their first Group B game of the championships in Chisinau yesterday (Tuesday), before coming up against Moldova this afternoon (Wednesday) and Armenia tomorrow (Thursday).

The classification games takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
