WITH Leicester Tigers and Saracens on his CV and a Kiwi tone to his London accent Andy Symons has already got the markings of a journeyman player.

The talented 22-year-old, who hails from Hertfordshire, has travelled to the other side of the world and back again in a bid to rack up valuable game-time.

After spells at Saracens and Old Albanians, Symons arrived in New Zealand before returning two years later following an unsuccessful trial at Leicester Tigers.

However, his unsettled lifestyle is something the exciting centre, who can also operate at fly half, told the Observer he was keen to change as he looks to develop at Worcester Warriors and make the city his home.

“It was a long term decision to move here,” Symons said. “I want to commit myself to a club as I want to have that security.

“I was just concentrating on playing well for Tasman Makos in the ITM Cup, but I then started having conversations with Dean (Ryan) through my agent.

“I have always known Warriors to be a very strong club, who have not been able to make the next step. But with the way Dean was talking it seemed to be really positive, so it was a bit of a no brainer to come here.”

During his two stints in New Zealand, Symons worked under former All Blacks stars Aaron Maugerand and Leon MacDonald as he spent time at Canterbury and Tasman Makos.

And the former Saracens academy ace, who marked his full debut for Warriors with a well-taken try against Leicester Tigers in the LV= Cup, said he was now keen to showcase what he has learnt in a Worcester shirt.

“I have massively benefited from my experiences in New Zealand,” Symons said. “The brand of rugby over there means you have got to use your head, especially at Canterbury who are an incredibly smart team.

“I learnt a ridiculous amount over those couple of years and I feel there is a great environment to transfer that here.”

He added: “All I can do as a rugby player is just keep putting my hand up, show what I can do and hope I can get the trust behind me.

“Exposure is exactly what I need. You can train all you want but it doesn’t matter until you get out on the field and put points on board. I just love playing, so knowing you have got the backing of Dean and the coaches to put you out there is what I want.”
