Skipper Mitchell extends Worcestershire's winning T20 run

WORCESTERSHIRE Rapids skipper Daryl Mitchell hit an unbeaten fifty to help his side to a third straight win in the T20 Blast competition.

Mitchell continued his fine form with the bat as his 67 not out from just 50 balls helped his team to an impressive five-wicket victory against Leicestershire at Grace Road after being set a challenging total of 165.

The win added to Worcestershire’s recent successes against Nottinghamshire and Northants in the shortest form of the game and moved them up to second place in the North group just two points behind leaders Lancashire going into Saturday’s home televised match against Durham (2.30pm start).

After winning the toss the home side, who have won the competition on three occasions, made 164-6 from their 20 overs with 21-year-old Tom Wells top scoring for the hosts hitting an unbeaten 45 from 28 balls.

But a solid start from Worcestershire helped them gain the upper hand early on as Richard Oliver hit a quick-fire 22 before he was bowled out by Ben Raine.

Contributions from Tom Kohler-Cadmore (23) and New Zealander Colin Munro (30) kept the visitors up with the required run rate and Mitchell reproduced the stunning form he has shown in the LV County Championship this season to guide the Rapids home with four balls to spare.

Worcestershire required eight off the final over from Rob Taylor but a six and a four off the first two balls by Mitchell sealed the win.
