Shillcock reflects on surreal experience

YOUNGSTER Jamie Shillcock admitted he was shocked to be integrated in Warriors’ first-team so early in his career and hailed his first three Aviva Premiership games as a ‘dream come true’.

The 19-year-old, whose preferred position is fly-half, replaced injured Chris Pennell at full back against Bath, Sale Sharks and Newcastle Falcons, where he played every minute and scored two tries.

Shillcock’s ‘surreal experience’ of playing at the top level has seen him rise through the Warriors and England ranks, having impressed for both the Worcester Cavaliers and England under-20s last year.

“I’ve really enjoyed playing in the Premiership and I didn’t expect to step-up to the senior squad this soon. It’s a dream come true, “said Shillcock.

“You always want to aspire to feature in the first team, but it’s been a bit of a shock to be given the opportunity so early. I’m very grateful though and hopefully I can get as much games as possible under by belt.

“I was very nervous making my first appearance against Bath, but the lads supported me throughout, especially the older guys like Phil Dowson.

“I settled in after that match and come the Sale game I knew what environment I was entering. It was a surreal experience scoring two tries. The first was a bit lucky as I just managed to dot the ball down, but the second which started back at out own 22 was special. Especially as it was my home debut.

“It’s been a big step-up from the academy and from playing in the A League, but when you look at Perry Humpherys, who seems to be scoring tries for fun since making his Premiership debut this year too, it makes you want to aspire to play like him.”

Shillcock also insisted the club’s first away win of the season is just around the corner if they keep replicating their recent performances.

“Despite just the one win so far, I think we’ve been playing some really dangerous rugby at times. I think it comes down to making sure we finish off games, especially at home,” he added.

“We’re not far from that first away win, which should stand us in good stead and help us kick on.”
