Rugby round-up: Worcester Ladies seal top three spot

WORCESTER Ladies secured a third place finish in the Premiership with an impressive 39-22 victory at Lichfield on Sunday.

Stephen Johnston got the visitors off the mark with a try after just three minutes before a brace from Kelly Smith gave her side a 15-10 lead at half time.

A Mo Hunt try, which Sarah Nicolas converted, had levelled the game on the half hour mark, but this was as close as they came as Worcester moved through the gears in the second period.

Ceri Large bagged another after the break before Worcester struck three times in the final quarter to clinch a convincing win, with Lisa Campbell, Bianca Blackburn and Laura Keates all crossing the line.

Wanderers suffer another set back

IT WAS another disappointing day at the office for Worcester Wanderers as they slumped to a 21-12 defeat to Crewe & Nantwich on Saturday.

Promotion-chasing Wanderers would have been looking to return to winning ways in Midlands One West after a draw to Silhillians and a loss to strugglers Berkswell & Balsall.

But Crewe’s forward pack proved too strong as they opened up an 11-point lead at half time. Stuart James’ side responded with tries from Olly Meadows and Jake Saddington in the second half to give them a glimmer of hope.

But Crewe clung on and fired over a late penalty which cost Worcester dearly as it denied them a losing bonus point.

Upton edged out by Ledbury

UPTON produced a battling display, but it was not enough to see off Ledbury who clinched a 10-7 victory in Midlands Three West (South) on Saturday.

On paper, Ledbury should have notched up a comfortable victory at Old Street, but second bottom Upton proved no pushovers.

The visitors took the lead, but Charlie Abbey was driven over and Chris O’Neil landed the conversion to level the score at 7-7.

However, the turning point came just before the break when O’Neil was sin-binned for stamping and George Bennion coolly dispatched what proved to be the winning points from the tee.
