Rugby round-up: Wanderers' promotion hopes suffer set back

WORCESTER Wanderers’ run of six straight victories came to an end on Saturday as fellow high-flyers Hereford clinched a 15-7 home victory.

Morgan Goodall scored all the points for the hosts, including a last-gasp penalty, which denied Worcester a bonus point as they returned home empty-handed.

The full back was the difference between the two sides, while Wanderers did not help their cause by turning down a number of chances at goal.

The visitors instead persisted with scrums and lineouts which failed to break down a determined Hereford defence.

Stuart James’ side managed to get a penalty try, but the boot of Goodall kept their local rivals in front before he slotted home his fifth penalty of the afternoon to rub salt into Worcester’s wounds.

A DOMINANT forwards display helped Worcester Ladies claim a convincing 27-7 win over Darlington Modwen Park Ladies on Sunday.

The visitors’ pack proved too hot to handle for Darlington as they provided a platform for Worcester’s backs to cause havoc.

Ceri Large opened the scoring with an 11th minute try before strong scrummaging led to a penalty try, which Megan Goodard duly dispatched.

Darlington managed to see out the rest of the half, but they suffered a blow early in the second period when Rochelle Clark powered over. Goddard added the extras.

Despite the setback the home side responded well and got their first try of the game through Carolyn Wilson, which Becky Scholes converted.

But Worcester eventually wrestled back possession and finished off the game with a 70th minute try from Lauren Chenoweth before Goddard completed the scoring.

WARRIORS stars James Percival, Ryan Bower and Jonny Arr all featured for the Championship XV as they came back to beat Canada 28-23 at Sixways.

The showpiece match on Sunday saw the visitors hold the upper hand at the break thanks to tries from Kyle Gilmour and Gordon McRorie.

But the the Championship side turned it around in the second half as Bristol pair Jack Tovey and Marco Mama went over before London Scottish star James Phillips clinched a thrilling win.
