Potgieter getting up to speed with Premiership

Worcester Editorial 2nd Mar, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

NEW SPRINGBOK Dewald Potgieter believes he has settled in at Warriors and is enjoying the ‘quick pace’ of Premiership rugby.

Since arriving from Japan, the back row has made appearances against Bath, Sale Sharks and Northampton Saints and is adjusting to the faster tempo of the English game.

“I feel like I’ve been at the club a lot longer than I have and I’ve been surprised by the pace of rugby here as it’s played so quickly,” said the 29-year-old.

“But that’s the way Warriors want to play and it’s something I’m happy about as it’s the way I like to play too.

“I’ve picked up where players are on the field and what’s going on in their heads which is important, especially with someone like Francois Hougaard who is the big link between forwards and backs.

“Francois has a lot to offer in terms of general play. It’s nice to see how good he has become at the basics of scrum-half play and his kicking has been on point.

“You can see the effect that has on Tom Heathcote at fly-half when he speeds up the game,” he added.

With plenty of competition in the back row, Potgieter insists nobody’s place is safe in the team.

“It’s a positive thing for the club as it’s great having so much competition. Playing in Japan, teams are only allowed two marquee players and when you’re almost sure to be picked the game plan is developed around you,” said Potgieter.

“So to come into a squad with a lot of depth and competition is really good for my personal game. I’ve trained and played with these guys for a couple of weeks now and they’re all quality players.

“Hopefully I’ll keep earning my spot in the side but nobody is sure to be picked.”
