MATT Richards won his first-ever individual medal at the Olympic Games after claiming silver in the men’s 200m freestyle at Paris 2024.
The Worcester Swimming Club star produced a remarkable swim from lane one as he missed out on gold by just two hundredths of a second.
Richards finished in 1 minute 44.74 seconds just behind Romanian David Popovici (1:44.72).
Fellow Brit Duncan Scott finished fourth (1:44.87) as American Luke Hobson snatched bronze (1:44.79) in a thrilling race.
Richards said: “I can’t be too disappointed with that, it’s my first ever individual medal at an Olympic Games so to walk away from that with a silver medal is fantastic.
“Obviously two one hundredths off gold is excruciatingly frustrating but look if anything it’s added more fire to my belly. I’ve got a lot more to go this week.
“Myself and Duncan, second and fourth, gutted for him by the way just missing out on the medal, he deserves it more than anyone but that bodes really well for our 4x200m. It fuels me on for the rest of this week.”
The 21-year-old returns to the pool in the men’s 100m freestyle tomorrow.
