Johnston: We will only get stronger

WARRIORS prop James Johnston has vowed the club’s poor performance against Wasps ‘definitely won’t happen again’.

The experienced forward, who joined Warriors in January from Wasps, admitted the recent 54-35 rout by his former club hurt, but insists the team have used their week off to make sure they are prepared and in the right frame of mind against Leicester Tigers this Saturday.

The New Zealand-born player, who has made 14 international appearances for Samoa, also believes he has developed as a player during his short time at Sixways and is looking forward to ending the season on a high.

“When I came to the club I could see it was already growing. They’re a great bunch of young guys who are still learning and I know for a fact in the next few years we’ll get stronger and stronger,” said the 30-year-old.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far and feel I’ve developed as a player. I relish every challenge that comes my way, either on or off the pitch.

“The atmosphere at Sixways has been amazing and I can’t thank the fans enough for turning out to support us every week. They’ve been behind us all season and believed in us all the way.

“The recent result against Wasps hurt, especially as they’re a former club, but we’ve licked our wounds and we’re now ready for Leicester Tigers this Saturday.

“It’ll be another massive challenge for us so we’ve been using the week off to make sure the Wasps result definitely won’t happen again,” he added.

Johnston, who amassed 102 Aviva Premiership appearances during a four year spell with Harlequins, believes Warriors are similar club to Quins.

“Warriors remind me of Harlequins in a way, when they dropped into the Championship but then gained promotion and grew into a force. That’s what’s happening here,” he added.

“But despite only being here since January, my highlight has to be the 21-15 win over Quins. They’re a strong side but we stood our ground and it was a massive result for us, especially away from home.”
