James hoping defence can stand firm against Sharks

WORCESTER Wolves director of basketball Paul James says a strong defence will be key if they are to keep up their winning momentum this weekend.

In-form Wolves will look to continue their solid start to their BBL Championship campaign when they take on Sheffield Sharks away from home tomorrow (Friday) – looking to record a fourth straight league win.

A victory could see Wolves climb to joint top position in the league table for at least 24 hours with current leaders Newcastle Eagles not in action until Saturday night when they come up against Plymouth Raiders.

This will be the first meeting between Wolves and Sharks this season with their last encounter being the BBL Playofff semi-final at the back end of last season.

Sheffield have had a mixed start to the campaign winning just three of their seven games and lie in tenth position in the table.

But James has warned his team of a tough night ahead and said his side must keep it tight in the early stages if they are to achieve another win on the board.

“We’ve got to be ready to play defence first and foremost, and then let our offence flow from there,” he said.

“We’re going to prepare well this week and hopefully go up there and get a win.

“Sharks are tough, last year we went up there and got beat by twenty (points). On the other hand we have been up there and beat them by twenty.

“You’ve got to go up there and you’ve got to challenge them because they are very tough on their own court.”

BBL Championship Top Four (number of games played in brackets)

1. NEWCASTLE EAGLES 16pts (9)

2. WORCESTER WOLVES 14pts (8)

3. LEICESTER RIDERS 14pts (8)

4. CHESHIRE PHOENIX 12pts (11)
