James eyes more glory

WORCESTER Wolves director of basketball Paul James believes his side can be even stronger in the next few years despite enjoying their most successful season in history.

A fine 2013/14 British Basketball League campaign saw Wolves win silverware for the first time since joining the division in 2000 – winning both the BBL Trophy and the BBL Play-offs within six weeks.

But Wolves’ main man is not resting on his laurels and has said he will look to add to its most successful squad in the coming months so they can remain one of the dominant forces in British Basketball.

“I came here with the intention of helping to give the city of Worcester a basketball team they can be proud of,” he said.

“The players have been so focused throughout the year in delivering success.

“Clearly we don’t want to change a winning team so, ideally, I would like to have all of the players return next season.

“I think we could be even stronger in one or two areas so, if it is possible to address that, then that’s what we’ll look to do.”

Prior to this season Wolves had never progressed past the semi-final of a knockout competition, let alone get out of the first round of the Play-offs, but it was a year where club records kept falling.

Although they missed out on the Championship title to Newcastle Eagles, Wolves still managed more wins in the league than ever before, recording their joint highest finish in third place – just two points off top spot.

“The fact we’ve been there or thereabouts all season long has been tremendous for us. To come away with two trophies is just unbelievable,” James added.

“I didn’t come to Worcester to make up the numbers or just make the play-offs.”
