James delighted by backing for Wolves

WORCESTER Wolves director of basketball Paul James has paid tribute to the club’s fans for their support in their rise to the top of the BBL Championship.

Wolves returned to the top of the league in emphatic style on Saturday after becoming the first team in more than 18 months to come away victorious from Leicester Riders.

After playing their first ten league games, Wolves have won eight and sit two points clear at the top of the table.

And James said the fans’ brilliant support has certainly helped play a part in their successful start to the campaign.

“The way the city of Worcester has got behind the Wolves this year has been immense,” he said.

“Like everyone else, I was extremely disappointed that Friday’s match (against Surrey United) had to be called off. It is fitting that the players did their best to ease some of that disappointment by pulling off such a fabulous win at Leicester the next day.

“In my four years at Wolves it is the only second time that we have come away from Leicester with a meaningful victory, and the first time the Riders have lost a league game there in nearly two years.

“I’m really happy for the players and for all of our supporters who saw the match and everyone else that has come along to back us at the University of Worcester Arena this season.

“I can certainly tell you that when the fans make a lot of noise it transmits to the team and gives us an extra lift to our performances.”

Wolves return to league action on Friday with a top of the table clash at second placed Newcastle Eagles.

James said his team will go into the game full of confidence and with nothing to fear.

“We’ve just had consecutive wins at two tough courts at Glasgow and Leicester and this latest win means we have grabbed the head-to-head advantage over the Riders,” he added.

“We’ve already won once in Newcastle a few weeks back and will now have the chance to seal the head-to-head over them as well.”
