WARRIORS scrum-half Francois Hougaard has been named Aviva Premiership ‘Rugby Player of the Month’ for March.
The Springbok, who is the first-ever Warriors player to win the prestigious honour, was recognised for his emphatic impact on the young squad since moving to Sixways in February.
Hougaard, who has recently signed a three-year contract at Warriors, pipped Saracens’ full-back Alex Goode and Northampton Saints’ back row Teimana Harrison to the award.
“I haven’t been here long but I’ve become really fond of Worcester,” said the Springbok. “There are incredible facilities here and the club have great ambitions which is something I’m really excited about being a part of.
“There are also a great bunch of players here and they’ve helped to make the transition very smooth for me since coming from the South Africa Sevens.
“Now my aim is to help drive Warriors up the Aviva Premiership table to achieve our long-term goal of becoming a top European side.”
The South African international’s key role in the club’s unbeaten March which comprised of four consecutive wins – a club record – gave him the trophy and a £250 donation to the charity of his choice.
Rugby fans across the UK had their say on who deserved to win the coveted award as they became the tenth judge, joining a panel which included Nick Mullins and Alastair Eykyn of BT Sport, Mick Cleary from The Daily Telegraph, Steve James from The Sunday Telegraph, Jill Douglas of ITV Sport and Chris Jones of BBC 5 Live.
Austin Healey, of BT Sport, said: “I don’t think there has been a better mid-season signing than Francois.
“While he would be the first to acknowledge his teammates, he was a vital ingredient to the victories which has seen Warriors secure their place in the Aviva Premiership next season.”
