Hogg targets B&I Cup glory

HEAD coach Carl Hogg has set his sights on winning the British & Irish Cup after Worcester Warriors secured their place in the quarter-finals.

Second half tries from Jean Baptiste Bruzulier and Charlie Mulchrone saw Warriors come from 15-6 behind at half time to beat Munster A 23-18 in Cork on Friday.

The victory sees Worcester qualify from Pool Three with a game to spare – meaning their next match against Nottingham at Sixways will effectively be a dead rubber.

But Hogg has urged his side to complete a clean sweep of victories in the group on Saturday as he aims to go all the way in the cup.

“We’re looking forward to coming up against Nottingham and we’ll try to go unbeaten in this tournament,” he said.

“There is a lot still riding on next weekend. We want to go home and put on a good display at Sixways and we’ll want to give people an opportunity to keep developing their game.”

Hogg praised the efforts of his players who clung on for a hard earned victory after Ignacio Mieres landed two kicks to open up a five-point cushion late on.

“We weathered the storm reasonably well for the first 20 minutes and ironically they were two soft tries that we gave away from the restart and a sharp bit of play from Munster,” he said.

“But during that final 20 minutes of the game we were heroic in defence and it showed how much this group care for Worcester, so if we can display that next weekend we’ll be in a good place.

“There were outstanding performances across the park. The back row put a lot of work in and Ravai Fatiaki had some huge collisions in midfield, but overall you saw a team that wanted to work for each other and cared about getting the result.”
