Hogg heaps praise on influential Betty

HEAD coach Carl Hogg has praised fearless flanker Sam Betty for giving Worcester Warriors more bite in attack this season.

The 28-year-old has been renowned for his full-blooded tackles and tireless work in the back row since he arrived at Sixways from Cornish Pirates in 2011.

But Hogg has been more impressed by how much Betty has improved in attack as he currently tops the club’s scoring charts with 17 tries in 18 appearances.

And the former Scotland international believed Betty, who was recently handed a new contract to extend his stay at the club, could still get better.

“Of course he can add more to his game,” he said. “His collision is his X-factor, but he has developed on the way he stays in the system defensively and he is much better at staying in a attack, so he will hold his width, remain patient and he has got some skills as well.

“Collision is a significant part of his game, but it is not everything.

“We want to play with width, so it puts back rowers on edges which gives them significant roles in attack. We do ask our front five to carry round corners, but we give licence and a way of a framework where back-rowers can hold width and influence the game form wider area and I think Sam has benefited from that.”

Hogg said Betty’s attacking threat also provides balance to the back row and works well along side new signing Sam Lewis.

“He is different style of player to a Sam Lewis who he is a more traditional seven whereas Sam Betty is more about collision,” he said.

“I think Sam Betty has played exceptionally well this year. He adds that bite in a tackle and he is a person who can turn games.”
