Heem: First season has been great

WARRIORS winger Bryce Heem believes his team have improved since their first outing against Saracens at Twickenham and is positive the club’s recent performances will bode them well going into next year’s campaign.

The Auckland-born player, who joined Warriors from Super 15 giants Waikato Chiefs last year, insists he has enjoyed his first campaign with the club in the Aviva Premiership and believes he was learnt a lot from his teammates.

The 6ft 4in Kiwi, who has scored seven tries this campaign, also admits his frustration at being pipped to fellow winger Cooper Vuna to being the club’s highest try scorer this year.

“I think we’ve made huge strides in our progress since the last time we played Saracens at Twickenham. We scored some great tries and at times put them under pressure, which is an improvement,” said Heem.

“I thought we were a lot sharper in the second half too. Hopefully we can continue this improvement into next season as we want to go one better next year and move our way up the table. We’ve got a side that can challenge the teams at the top, so it’s just about being consistent in our performances.

“Myself and Vuna were both well aware we were on seven tries apiece going into the game. After he scored that first try in the first-half I said to him ‘I’m next mate’, but then he snuck in and stole the try at the end of the game. Fair play to him though, nine tries in a single season is a great achievement.

“Personally, I’ve really enjoyed my first campaign in the Premeirship with Warriors. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot and hopefully the players have learnt from what I’ve bought from Super Rugby as well.

“It’s been the first time I lived away from New Zealand but I’ve loved it. I think Worcester has been a great choice for me and my wife and we’re now looking forward to getting away from rugby during this break to have a belated honeymoon, as we got married in January and never had time for one,” he added.

The 27-year-old also admits he is relishing the chance to play on an artificial pitch at Sixways next season.

“I’m excited for the artificial turf as they make the game much quicker which will definitely suit my style of play. I think it’ll be good to use a surface which the weather won’t affect throughout the campaign, especially in the winter when the ground can become boggy and heavy on the legs,” he added.
