Heeley - playing catch-up is fine

WORCESTER City joint manager Carl Heeley has insisted he is not worried about a backlog of fixtures after their game at Alfreton Town was postponed.

The postponement of Saturday’s Vanarama National League North game leaves City having only played 25 games – with most the teams around them having played 28 games.

But the former City player has said it was out of the club’s hands when games are cancelled due to weather and that his squad are more than up for playing catch-up.

“We’re frustrated we didn’t get to play Alfreton Town, but it was out of our control. We knew it was forecast to rain and it was the right decision to call it off,” he told the Observer.

“I’m not worried about a fixture backlog. It’s mainly down to the FA Cup run we had rather than the weather and we’ve still got a number of weeks left to catch up,” he added.

The Blue and Whites were handed a boost when Shaun Donnellan extended his loan spell from West Bromwich Albion – a decision which left Heeley pleased with his squad for the games ahead.

Ahead of this weekend’s match against Chorley, Heeley is confident his team can replicate the performance they put in last season when they shared the points in an entertaining 3-3 draw.

“Looking ahead at Saturday’s game in Lancashire, I think Chorley are a good side. They have a big forward who forces you to defend well at set-pieces.

“But it’s the type of game we know we can win. We scored three goals there last season so we’re looking forward to making the trip north.”

Following Saturday’s trip, City then travel to top six outfit Nuneaton Town before welcoming Stalybridge Celtic to Aggborough the following Tuesday.

Victory in Lancashire could lift City into the top 12 depending on other results and Heeley expressed confidence in his squad for the fixtures ahead.

“We’ve proved we can beat anyone on our day, whether it’s a League One team or a National League North team,” he added.
