Heeley delight at Thomas debut

A COMMANDING debut from Wayne Thomas has seen Worcester City manager Carl Heeley heap praise on the new addition.

The centre-back signed for the Blue and Whites on Friday (February 28) and made his first start the following day, helping his new side to a 2-1 victory over struggling Stalybridge Celtic.

Thomas signed from neighbours Tamworth and brought a wealth of experience to fill the void left by Jamie Grimes, who was recalled by parent club Kidderminster Harriers.

The 34-year-old, who has 500 league games under his belt, made an instant impact and showed the physical presence City have often been crying out for this season.

“He’s a proper centre half,” Heeley said. “He’s an absolute man-mountain. He’s come and won every ball and he’s experienced.

“From the first minute he came into the changing room today there’s an aura and a presence about him. You look at that back four today and we looked solid.

“The only thing I’m thankful of is I’m not one of their two forwards today because he’s absolutely bashed the both of them and alongside Hutch (Graham Hutchison) I thought the two centre halfs were magnificent.”
