HEAD coach Carl Hogg believes the signing of experienced back row Mat Gilbert was exactly what Worcester Warriors needed.
The 28-year-old made his debut on Saturday when he came off the bench in Warriors’ stunning 47-7 victory over Rotherham Titans.
His appearance at Clifton Lane rounded off a superb week for Gilbert who landed a contract at the club after impressive during his trial period.
The flanker, who began his career with Llanelli Scarlets, was released by Bath last month after two years at The Rec and Hogg said they were delighted to get Gilbert on board.
“I can’t specifically talk about what happened at Bath, but I can talk about Mat as a rugby player and he is a quality one,” he said.
“Mat became available, so we gave him the opportunity to come and train. He enjoyed it and played a couple of Monday night game.
“We then had more dialogue and we were able to pursue it further, which was fantastic.
“What we are getting is a player, with really good values which is exactly what we need and exactly what fits in with what this club is.
“He has played for Llanelli and played in the Premiership so he has got a wealth of experience which just adds to our group.”
Gilbert, who is the only deaf professional sportsman in England, said he was grateful of the opportunity at Sixways.
“I’m really excited to have signed for Warriors,” Gilbert added. “I’ve immensely enjoyed playing for the Cavaliers in recent weeks and I am now looking forward to working hard and being part of this club’s future.
“There is a fantastic team spirit here and everybody wants to be part of something special so it is a very exciting time for everyone involved with the club.”
