Gauntlet is thrown down says Grove

EXPERIENCED centre Alex Grove has said Worcester Warriors’ senior players have a point to prove after the club’s young guns impressed in the LV= Cup.

The 25-year-old, who has made more than 100 appearances for the Sixways outfit, is set to be among a number of familiar faces to return to Warriors’ starting line-up for their Aviva Premiership clash at Sale Sharks on Friday night.

But, after watching midfield duo Max Stelling and Andy Symons stake their claim for a regular first team spot with strong showings against Cardiff Blues and Leicester Tigers, Grove said he cannot afford for his performances to drop.

“I think the guys who have come in over the last two weeks have given a really good account of themselves, especially some of the youngsters,” he said.

“Andy (Symons) has only been here a couple of weeks, so he has had to learn quickly. But credit to him, he got a try in his first home game, which was a real lift for the team.

“Max (Stelling) played really well when he came in last year and he is continuing to push for a first team spot, so we all know that when we get a chance we have all got to take it, like the younger guys have done in the last few weeks.

“Whether you are trying to get into the team or trying to stay in the team, you have still got a point to prove. You can’t afford to give it up otherwise people waiting in the wings will take your position.

“I have been in that position where I have been the one desperate to get any opportunity I can, but I am now in a position where I am fighting to keep hold of my shirt.”

Grove also said Warriors’ performances in the Anglo-Welsh cup competition, which included victory over Cardiff, has given the squad a much-needed morale boost as they set their sights on recording a first league win this season.

“I think we are in a better position now than we were two weeks ago,” Grove said.

“The confidence has cranked up a little bit, which is crucial as we head back into the league and we are desperate to get that first win.

“In the past Sale has been a good hunting ground for us, so we will see. But if we can hold on to some of the things we have worked on in the LV= Cup it will stand us in good stead.”
