WORCESTER City will be looking to continue their good form when they head to 14th-placed Coventry Sphinx tomorrow (Saturday).
Chris Cornes’ third-placed side will travel in good spirits after a 1-0 victory on Tuesday night against Wellingborough Town.
It was a toughly contested match on a cold and misty Bonfire Night and four Worcester players, including captain Adam Mace, found themselves in the referee’s notebook.
With the match heading to wards a stalemate, the substitutions made the difference. In the 74th minute, Dylan Hart replaced Zach Guinan and Liam Lockett came on for Taylor Townsend.
It was Hart who finally broke the deadlock in the 80th minute and claimed all three points.
Worcester remain third in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division on 30 points but are eight points behind Quorn in second, having played two more games.
Corby Town sit top on 39.
Last Saturday, City claimed a dramatic late 2-1 win against Coleshill Town at Claines Lane.
The victory was well-deserved as City were the better of the two sides in the first half and started well, having plenty of chances. Set-pieces posed problems for both teams but it was Worcester who struck first in the 24th minute. Coleshill keeper Tyrese Warmington made a good save from a header, following a corner from Adam Mace and Charlie Wise smashed home the rebound.
The Faithful nearly doubled their lead moments later when Felix Miles forced a fine save and they continued to press.
The visitors nearly equalised before half-time but City managed to hold onto their lead. Coleshill came out fighting in the second half, and City’s Jordan Lymm had to clear off his own line in the 66th minute.
They did find an equaliser in the 72nd minute. Shaquille Whittingham fired a low ball into the box and Matt Hughes turned it into the net.
The visitors then looked more likely to find a winner and came close in the 83rd minute when Joe Palmer’s bobbling effort went wide.
But it was Worcester who found the net and took the points in the 92nd minute when substitute Elliott Harley crossed for Kyle Belmonte to head home.
It is a busy few days for City. After tomorrow’s league encounter with Sphinx (3pm), they then travel to Redditch United (7.45pm) on Monday night for the quarter-final of the Worcestershire Senior Cup.
