WORCESTER City surrendered an early lead in a 2-1 defeat away at St Ives Town as Chris Cornes’ side lost successive away games in the league for the first time this season.

An early goal from Dan Sweeney put City ahead only for second-half strikes from Tyrone Baker and Michael Richens to turn the game on its head at Westwood Road.

The result means Worcester sit ninth in the Southern League Premier Central table, five points outside of the play-off places.

City had the first chance of the game as Sweeney saw his free-kick from 25-yards out pushed to safety by St Ives goalkeeper Ollie Taylor.

And Sweeney broke the deadlock on 10 minutes when he poked home from close range after Liam Lockett’s free-kick into the box evaded everybody and struck the post.

St Ives responded with a chance at the other end as Richens stabbed a first time effort narrowly over the crossbar from a corner.

City goalkeeper Harley Price then acrobatically tipped Gibou Njie’s powerful effort from distance over the bar.

From the resulting corner, St Ives somehow failed to turn the ball home as the ball hit the woodwork in a goalmouth scramble and stayed out of the Worcester net.

The home side remained on top as Charlie Wise produced a heroic block to prevent Njie’s goalbound volley from troubling Price in the Worcester net.

Worcester spurned a golden chance to double their lead early in the second period as Njie made a last-ditch to take the ball off the toe of Connor Stanley in the box following a counter attack.

However, St Ives equalised on 62 minutes when Baker slid in to divert a cross towards goal and the ball deflected into the net past a helpless Price.

City almost reclaimed the lead with their next attack as Taylor superbly tipped Lockett’s curling effort behind for a corner with the ball destined for the bottom right corner.

However, the home side completed the turnaround 10 minutes from time when Richens caught Shay Palmer in possession and finished into an empty net from Liam Cross’s square pass.

Worcester are next in action against Spalding United on Saturday, December 13 with kick-off at 3pm at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.
