WORCESTER City suffered a cruel 1-0 opening day defeat against Quorn in the club’s first competitive game at their new Sixways home.

An injury time goal from Quorn substitute Finn O’Boyle condemned City to an opening day defeat at Sixways.

The result means Worcester sit 17th in the Southern League Premier Central table.

City almost broke the deadlock when Niall Flint brought down a long ball and forced Quorn goalkeeper Tom Allsopp into a smart save high to his right.

Quorn responded with a chance of their own as Silvio Bello delivered a dangerous cross into the box from the right and Billy Kee flicked an effort against the post from close range.

And the visitors hit the woodwork again soon after as Ryan Beswick’s free-kick from 20-yards out struck the crossbar.

Veteran striker Kee nodded in the rebound only for the assistant referee to raise his flag for offside.

Quorn hit the woodwork for a third time shortly before the break as Haydn Whitcombe superbly tipped Dennis Digie’s effort onto the base of the post.

After the interval, it was City’s turn to hit the frame of the goal as Nathan Hayward saw his low strike tipped onto the post by Allsopp.

And Worcester rattled the woodwork again later in the second half as Hayward’s first time shot from distance crashed against the post with Allsopp beaten.

However, miscommunication between Whitcombe and Logan Stoddart allowed Quorn substitute O’Boyle to nip in and finish into an empty net in injury time to snatch the points for the visitors.

Worcester are next in action against Banbury United on Tuesday, August 12 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Spencer Stadium.
