AN EXTRAORDINARY own goal helped Worcester City on their way to a first home win of the season with a 2-0 victory against Bishop’s Stortford.
After Dan Sweeney put Worcester ahead, Stortford’s Charlie Johnson scored a remarkable own goal from distance to double City’s lead at Sixways Stadium.
The result lifts Worcester out of the Southern League Premier Central relegation zone, one point above Stourbridge in 18th place.
City broke the deadlock on 13 minutes when Sweeney latched onto Harry Burns’ flick and drove into the penalty area before forcing a shot through the body of Stortford goalkeeper Adam Hayton.
And Worcester doubled their lead in fortuitous circumstances on 25 minutes which left all inside Sixways stunned.
Stortford defender Johnson attempted to play the ball back to goalkeeper Hayton around 25-yards from goal.
However, Johnson overcooked the pass which looped over his goalkeeper and into the net on a debut to forget for the full-back.
Worcester are next in action against Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday, October 21 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Sixways.
