FOOTBALL: Hillsiders visit Raiders buoyed by Roman conquest

MALVERN Town co-manager Lee Hooper hailed the resilience of his table-topping Hillsiders ahead of their festive clash with Worcester Raiders at Sixways.

Town strengthened their position at the top of the Hellenic League Premier with a 2-0 win at Roman St Glass and go into Tuesday’s (December 27) game 10 points clear of Karl Gormley’s men.

Goals from Matt Turner and Ben Hayes secured the three points on Saturday which keeps Hooper’s side three points clear of Cribbs, albeit with the Bristol side having two games in hand.

“It was a good, solid away performance,” said Hooper. “Our hosts had a few good spells on the ball, but in areas we were comfortable with so they didn’t really cause us too many problems as we restricted them to a couple of half-chances.

“A clean sheet was pleasing as I feel we deserve that how solid we were. Roman Glass are a decent, young and well-drilled side who made things difficult for us and we will need to be at the same levels when we play them at home in a few weeks’ time.

Both Town and Raiders were due to be in action on Wednesday (December 21) with a trip to Fairford Town for the Hillsiders while Hereford Lads Club were set to visit Sixways.

Worcester City meanwhile will hope to return to action on December 27 for the first time in nearly three and a half weeks when Lye Town visit Claines Lane.

Saturday’s trip to Market Drayton Town became the latest victim of the big freeze leaving Chris Cornes men without football since December 3.
