Fit-again Heem hungry for tries

Worcester Editorial 23rd Nov, 2016   0

EXPLOSIVE winger Bryce Heem insists he is hungry for tries after missing more than a quarter of Warriors’ season due to a knee injury.

The New Zealander, who crossed the whitewash seven times last season for the Sixways outfit, came off the bench to score a last gasp try in Warriors’ defeat to Northampton Saints on Friday.

The former Waikato Chiefs player has been itching to make an impact after sitting six months on the sidelines due to a knee injury he picked up in pre-season, but despite scoring on his comeback, the 2015/16 Warriors Player of the Season was frustrated with the club’s ill discipline against Saints.

“I’d been waiting a long time to make my return, so it felt really good to get back out there. I had a good week building up to the Northampton game and obviously coming on from the bench, I just wanted to make an impact. It’d been a long six months to recovery, so the hunger to play had built up,” said the Kiwi.

“We had a game plan which seemed to be going well, but we just didn’t follow it through enough. There’s a lot of frustration and the only plus side is the losing bonus point.

“Jamie Shillcock has a pretty big boot on him and his confidence is awesome for such a young guy. From my angle it looked as if his penalty kick had made it over, but hit or miss, he’s got a good head on his shoulders and doesn’t need support.

“I thought overall we were a better side than Saints, but our discipline always seems to let us down. If we can hit that on the head I think we’ll really make some strides.

“I was at the end of a chain to score and keep the game alive following a well worked move. It’s always a good feeling to cross the whitewash, especially when it’s your first game back from injury,” he added.

The former New Zealand Sevens player admitted his desire to be among the club’s top try scorers for a second consecutive year, despite already missing seven Premiership games.

“Hopefully I haven’t put too much pressure on myself, but a few more tries wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I’m quite a competitive person so I’m always pushing myself to perform at my best, especially now that the youngsters have took their opportunities.

“Hopefully, if the coaches are happy with the way I’m training and playing, I can make the same impact against Exeter Chiefs on Saturday.”
