Fan's view: Warriors finally offer a reason to smile

THE FANS are already talking about the day ‘I was there’ after our victory over Oyonnax.

A win – albeit in the Amlin Challenge Cup – is still a win, and hopefully some much-needed confidence can be taken forward into the remainder of the season.

The victory may have been against a travelling French side, who are notorious for not performing away from home, but Oyonnax have tasted success against some big-spending clubs in the Top 14 this season.

Apart from the final whistle, one of the biggest cheers of the afternoon came from the supporters in the South Stand when Ignacio Mieres kicked over a successful attempt after missing some easy ones earlier.

I really do hope this has given the guy a boost in confidence. Once he had found the target, he seemed much more relaxed and it was his towering kick that led to Warriors’ second try.

Dean Ryan’s selection policy of bringing youngsters into first team action paid dividends, with Max Stelling and Josh Watkins shining, which brings further hope for the future, while it was also encouraging to see the pack front up to the physicality of the French side.

They will need to continue with this grit over the coming months in the battle to stay up.
