I KNOW we were in Cornwall but as the wind ripped along the promenade the talk in our group was have we learnt from our last away trip?
It took the last 20 minutes of the first half to get to a resounding ‘yes’.
The next question at half time was ‘can we play a full 80 minutes?’ The answer at full time was another resounding ‘yes’.
So in the bar afterwards we did a quick snap poll – well, it is election time – of the Pirates fans with the question: ‘What is the difference between Bristol and Worcester?’
The answer was in the main the same from them all – ‘Bristol are more physical but your backs are far superior, get them the ball and we will miss you next season.’
So the take on the game was simple. The team played as one from the Ryan Lamb yellow card, our kicking in the conditions was superb and we were very professional in a game we could easily have sat back on in the second half and let drift.
As important is the lessons have been learnt from Jersey and the Yorkshire game and we do not have a group of individuals, we have a team playing as one for each other.
To finish let’s get back to the beginning. No dream would have predicted the final score and for the fans of Cornwall to not remonstrate with their players or other supporters. As one they gave praise to Worcester which is a credit to our team, our supporters and more importantly them.
The end of the game was also ironic because the announcer gave the Cornish Pirates man of the match to Darren Barry. The advice from Cornwall was ‘look after him, he is a gem’ – just like Sam Betty.
