Fan's view: Talk nights highlight reasons to be cheerful

Worcester Editorial 16th Jan, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

WE ARE at the halfway point in the season and we have still failed to put a win on the board in the Aviva Premiership. It is a worrying time at Sixways.

However, having said that, I have never felt so positive about the club’s future – even if we are staring down the barrel of relegation.

The coaching set-up along with the rebuilding of the academy is a big positive. We have to remember that in its previous guise, the Worcester academy developed several players who have gone on to represent England at a number of age levels.

But for whatever misguided reason the academy faltered.

If you don’t grow your own talent, you end up buying in that player you feel fits your model. But when you are consistently in the bottom four, you are not going to attract the ‘next big thing’, so you end up paying high wages for older players or journeymen who are nearing the end of their careers.

Yes, we do appear to be facing the drop but, having attended the two Dean Ryan talk nights held for supporters, I think we now understand this cycle has to change for the team to develop.

Also, some of the best rugby I have ever seen at Sixways was when we were in the Championship, so if we have to drop back to move forward, I for one shall be there giving my full support.
