Fan's view: Anglo-Welsh battle was a real treat

WITH only one stand open for a cup match which you had to pay to watch despite having a season ticket, it could have been a recipe for a dull afternoon.

But Saturday seemed a special day at Sixways, with Wales being a dominant talking point among fans.

It was great news that former Welsh international Jonathan Thomas had already put pen to paper for a further two years and the first Six Nations game for England is less than a fortnight away at the Millennium Stadium.

However, it was Pontypridd who played an important role, not just on the pitch, but in the stands too.

In amateur times, Anglo-Welsh contests were fiercely contested, with bragging rights up for grabs, and the fans certainly were ‘the 16th man’.

It was great to relive those days again, and thanks to the large number of Ponty fans for playing their part in the entertainment.

The game seemed all but over as a contest after just 20 minutes, with Warriors scoring three converted tries.

The travelling supporters certainly made themselves vocal and backed their team over the remaining hour, in what was a compelling match.

But it was Warriors who march on into the semis of the British & Irish Cup, and with it more experience of closing out games.

As a Welshman in England, it was strange feeling elated, as your countrymen left Sixways disappointed.

However, I for one will be hoping for a home win in Cardiff on Friday, February 6.
