Fans have their say on Warriors' prospects

Worcester Editorial 12th Mar, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

WITH just six games remaining in this season’s Aviva Premiership, Warriors have got it all to do to steer clear of relegation as they sit 11 points adrift of safety.

But with 30 possible points still available and with must-win clashes against London Wasps and Newcastle Falcons up next, there is a chance Dean Ryan’s men can pull off ‘the great escape’.

However, before they get their bid for survival back underway next week, we asked Warriors’ fans on the club’s unofficial forum what they thought of their side’s chances.

Schneiderlein said: “Despite the anguish of the hope inflicted on me by the blind optimism of my heart, my head and I are quite resigned to being in the Championship next season. Perhaps it’s a case of ‘expect the worst and you won’t be too disappointed when it happens, but deliriously happy if it doesn’t’.

“Our last season in the Championship was thoroughly enjoyable for a host of good reasons. We will certainly have a very good chance of bouncing straight back up.”

Malvern Man said: “Newcastle are playing worse than us at the moment. All the things that happened to Worcester are now happening to them – namely injuries, suspensions, no rub of the green with the referees and no good fortune at all.

“They haven’t won for a long time and they can’t score tries – even compared with us.

“If we beat Wasps, which is not impossible, we would then have momentum to take into the game at Newcastle. Win that, and we’ll probably survive.”

Wrfc1981 said: “I don’t believe that Warriors will pull off ‘the great escape’ and I feel it will all but be sealed when we lose to Falcons.

“However, I think Dean Ryan was brought in with a five-year plan and most likely acknowledged that in order to take our club forward we need to go back to the grassroots of Championship rugby, build up the academy and put some pride back in the shirt.

“Forget what Dean says every week, he knew when he took over that there was a slim chance we would survive with this squad, so judge him a year after we return from the Championship. I think by then we will have survived comfortably and be looking to push top six the year after.”

WarwickEastie said: “Had we started the year playing like we did against Tigers and Quins, then I’d be confident of staying up. Unfortunately, it’s too late.

“We’ve lacked top quality in a couple of key areas – notably front row and place kicking, but I believe we are a Premiership side – albeit lower half of the table.

“A year in the Championship may be what the doctor ordered to get the new players and systems bedded in before we step back into the big time”

Shoutin’ Bloke said: “There has to be hope – even at this late stage in the season. Yes, it flies in the face of reason and stats, but sometimes that is what following and supporting a team is all about.

“I don’t think the season is finished for us yet, and while we can survive numerically we have the chance as a team to overcome doubters and stats and live up to the name, Warriors.”
