Dewald: Warriors must stick together to climb table

SPRINGBOK Dewald Potgieter believes Worcester Warriors have the enthusiasm and intent to ‘fix’ their current situation and climb up the Aviva Premiership table.

The back row, who has been skippering the team during GJ van Velze’s injury absence, insisted his young squad is still building after an impressive home win against Harlequins on New Year’s Day for only their second victory of the league campaign.

Warriors will be looking to make it consecutive wins in their bid for Premiership safety when they take on Gloucester at Kingsholm this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Bottom-of-the-table Bristol have secured back-to-back wins to move within two points of Warriors, but tenth-placed Sale’s dip in form has left them five points clear of Worcester.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here immensely and it’s great to contribute to a club that wants to go places,” said Potgieter, who joined Worcester last February after a spell in Japan.

“I love being in the thick of the action, so it’s always a privilege when the head coach calls on you to skipper the team.

“Being captain can sometimes depend on the group you are working with and within this specific group, there’s a whole lot of energy and intent. It makes my job leading the team a lot easier when we’re all channeling the same enthusiasm and will to work hard.”

The 29-year-old, who made his name in Super Rugby with the Bulls, says the supporters also have a huge role to play.

“We’ve got a young squad and this is a very important time for everyone at the club. We have to stick together and move forward as a unit,” said Potgieter.

“Everyone I’ve worked with since arriving at the club wants to succeed.

“The squad is hungry and the players always want to win and please our fans. We need the supporters at this important stage of the season.

“We also need to keep our heads up and put in performances to be proud of.

“We can’t look too far forward. We just need to focus our energy on this weekend’s game (Gloucester). We’re still building and have guys coming back from injury, so there’s always something to look forward to.

“The situation we’re in isn’t the nicest of cards to be dealt, but we have to fix it and turn things around.”
