VALKYRIES director of rugby Roy Davies believes there is more to come from his side after they earned their first points of the season in a gritty 12-12 draw against Firwood Waterloo Ladies.
Valkyries’ match against Loughborough Lightning in the Tyrrells Premier 15s on Sunday was postponed due to heavy snowfall and will be rescheduled at a later date.
The extra week off has given Davies time to reflect on his side’s poor start to the campaign.
They suffered eight successive heavy defeats before snapping the losing streak with a draw against Firwood Waterloo Ladies at the Memorial Ground in Blundellsands.
That display gave the Worcester chief plenty of encouragement as his side prepare for the second half of the season.
“There were a huge number of positives in terms of things we’ve worked on in training in the last few months, and it was really good to see the girls implement them,” said Davies.
“Waterloo are a really good side and we have to give them credit. They have some really good runners and strong players who are a physical threat, but we stood up to that challenge which was pleasing.
“We made some system errors which we need to improve on and develop, but we’re not the finished article yet.
“Any time you show you can set a standard, then it’s realistic to expect that standard as a bare minimum and to keep progressing from there.
“I’d be disappointed if we dropped below that now because I know that’s what we’re capable of. There are a lot of other teams in this league we can stand up to,” he added.
Valkyries return to action on Saturday when they take on Bristol Ladies Rugby at Cleve RFC (kick-off 7pm).
