Cup win can be a spur - Grove

CENTRE Alex Grove believes Worcester Warriors’ success in the British & Irish Cup has given them the platform to kick on and secure their place in the Aviva Premiership.

But he has urged the club’s supporters to pack out Sixways and other Greene King IPA Championship grounds as they look ahead to next month’s play-offs.

The 27-year-old said he was “overwhelmed” by the amount of people who turned out to see Warriors claim their first silverware of the season with a 35-5 victory over Doncaster Knights at Castle Park.

And he believes they can play a key role in returning their side, who are currently second in the league, to the top flight as the season reaches its climax.

“I don’t know what the numbers were, but we probably outnumbered Doncaster in terms of support,” he said.

“It means a lot to us when they get behind us and in the same way it is great for us to win some silverware, the supporters deserve it as well as a lot of those guys come every week.

“It has been a long wait for them since we last won something, but there is still one more to win this season and hopefully we can kick on and win that.”

Grove, who has made more than 100 appearances for Warriors, has struggled for game-time in the Championship this season as his last outing came in December.

The former Scotland international said he was hopeful of making Dean Ryan’s 22 for the play-offs, but he insisted his main focus has been on winning the British & Irish Cup.

“Opportunities have been limited and the guys who have been playing in the first team have been playing well,” Grove added.

“I want to get back in there, but winning today (Friday) was the priority.

“It was about playing with the guys who I have played the majority of my rugby with this season and winning with them and there is a really good buzz in the changing room now.”
