DESPITE double centuries from Adam Hose and Jake Libby, Worcestershire were forced to settle for a County Championship draw against Hampshire.

The Pears declared on 679-7 and dismissed Hampshire for 221 in reply to enforced the follow-on at the Utilita Bowl.

Hampshire began the final day on 86-3 with Worcestershire in need of seven wickets to claim a vital victory.

However, home captain Ben Brown batted the entirety of the final day to frustrate the Pears who could only claim a single scalp with the ball.

Worcestershire come away from the fixture with 16 points while Hampshire salvaged nine points.

The result leaves the Pears bottom of the County Championship Division One table, 15 points behind Essex.

Pears pile on the runs

The visitors finished the opening day of play on 456-3 as Hose and Libby dazzled on the south coast.

However, James Fuller (3-121) accounted for opener Henry Nicholls (0) for a duck in the fourth over and then trapped Kashif Ali (44) LBW.

This brought Hose and Libby to the crease in the 13th over and the records began to tumble.

Hose (266) made the highest-ever score by a number four batter for the Pears with his knock coming from just 253 deliveries.

He also recorded the highest-ever first class score by a visiting player at the Utilita Bowl.

Libby (228 not out) scored a brilliant double-ton of his own, his highest first class score, to put the visitors in complete command.

Hose eventually succumbed to the bowling of Dominic Kelly (1-94) which brought an end to a remarkable 395-run partnership.

And Gareth Roderick (80) chipped in with useful runs before Worcestershire declared before tea on the second day.

Wickets tumble as Pears close in on victory

Tom Taylor (4-42) starred with the ball while Libby ran out Tilak Varma (56) who top scored for the hosts in reply.

Debutant Callum Parkinson (2-21) also claimed two wickets after signing on a two-week loan deal with the Pears.

The home side bowled out Hampshire for 221 and enforced the follow-on with the hosts still 458 runs behind.

And three late wickets on day three, which saw Hampshire opener Ali Orr (35) tread on his own stumps, left Worcestershire needing seven wickets for victory on the final day.

Brown digs in as Hampshire salvage draw

However, only debutant Parkinson (2-82) claimed a wicket on the final day as the spin bowler dismissed Varma (47).

The Pears toiled away to no avail as Brown (109 not out) faced 270 balls and lasted 331 minutes at the crease supported by Liam Dawson (60 not out).

With Hampshire on 294-4, Pears skipper Libby settled for a draw and shook hands with the home batters at 5pm.

Worcestershire are next in action in the T20 Blast against Yorkshire on Friday, July 4 with the game to start at 6.30pm at Headingley
