CRICKET: Gidman leaves New Road as off-field shake up continues

WORCESTERSHIRE’S off the field shake up has continued with the news Alex Gidman has stepped down as head coach.

Pears chiefs confirmed the former Gloucestershire batsman will depart New Road with immediate effect after four years in charge.

The club are already on the lookout for a director of cricket to replace outgoing Paul Pridgeon with former England spinner Ashley Giles the favourite to take over.

During his spell as head coach, Gidman oversaw the 2018 Blast success and the agonising defeat in the 2019 final, denying the chance for the Pears to become the first team to retain the title.

A disappointing 2022 season saw the Rapids endure two poor white-ball competitions and while form in four-day cricket was improved, the club will remain in Division Two next summer.

“I enjoyed my time at Worcestershire and would like to thank the club for all for its support. I wish the club well for the future,” Gidman said.

Chair Fanos Hira said: “Alex has led the club to great success winning the T20 Blast in 2018 and runner up in 2019. We wish him well in the next steps of his career and thank him for his contribution to our club.”
