The Craig Gillies Column: Warriors must stay on their mettle

AFTER having some down time with no game last weekend, the guys will now be coming into the serious end of the season.

A break can be disruptive when you are on a good run of form, but I think this rest will be vital for the boys. It will allow them to let their bodies repair and recover as there are some big games coming up, including the British & Irish Cup semi-final against Leinster A next weekend.

I just hope they can just keep building on that momentum they have had since the start of this year, which has seen them move to the top of the table.

Being top of the pile might not matter in the grand scheme of things, but after losing to Bristol on the first game of the season, it has been impressive to see them claw back a couple of bonus points to overtake them. I also think it gives Warriors a slight psychological edge, especially if they are in that position heading into the play-offs.

I have also been pleased to see their strength in character shine through in recent weeks. Having received a real scare from Bedford in the play-off semi-finals a few years ago, I wasn’t too surprised to see them burst into a 17-0 lead at Goldington Road.

But the pleasing thing for me was that coaching team and the players got together at half-time and highlighted what they needed to do and then went out and did their jobs effectively.

So what could have been a bit of a bump, may have served as a timely reminder that they need to stay on their mettle for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, it has been great to see the club make a number of new signings. Building for next season is obviously something they are taking quite seriously and I am sure there will be a lot more movement over the next couple of months.
