The Craig Gillies Column: Defeat in Jersey could be what they needed

I THINK Worcester’s defeat in Jersey was a reality check for the guys, but in the grand scheme of things I don’t think it was necessarily a bad thing.

On Saturday, Warriors produced exactly the type of performance and response that the coaches and fans would have wanted to see.

London Scottish have been flying as they are third in the league, so they are quality opposition, but in the end it was a resounding victory for Worcester which I am sure was pleasing for everyone at the club.

It is now about moving onwards and upwards and building momentum ahead of the play offs. It would have been nice to have only had the one loss to Bristol and then seen the rest of the season out unbeaten.

It is a similar situation to what we faced when we were last in the Championship. Cornish Pirates came up and caught us when we were a bit off colour and beat us at home.

But this just served as a reminder that you can’t take your foot off the gas. Warriors are still a big scalp for any side in this league, so it is going to be a tough run in.

But I think the guys will really want to stamp their authority on the rest of the season and I have no doubt they will be looking to take maximum points from every game in a bid to put the pressure back on Bristol.

Friday’s British & Irish Cup final against Doncaster is also an important clash for the whole squad as it is not only a chance of taking the first silverware of the year, but also an opportunity for those fringes players to showcase themselves and remind the coaches they are pushing for places.
